In a remarkable show of commitment to environmental sustainability and community service, the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Prestige, in collaboration with JIMLAT Foundation, Inc. carried out a Tree Planting Project across strategic public locations in Abeokuta metropolis, Ogun State.
The initiative, which aligns with the two organizations areas of focus on Supporting the Environment, aims to promote greener communities, mitigate the effects of climate change, and enhance the aesthetic value of public spaces.
The tree planting exercise covered four major areas within the state capital: the Ogun State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Riverside Extension of Federal Housing Estate, Elega, the Impeccable-Odofin Estate, Obantoko and Gbonnagun Community. Each site was carefully selected to promote community engagement and to ensure the long-term impact of the project.
Speaking during the exercise, the United President of the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Prestige, Rtn. Adedayo Oladipo Ayegbokiki and the founder of JIMLAT Foundation, Alhaji (Chief) Jimoh Lateef, emphasized the importance of tree planting as a sustainable intervention that supports human health, improves air quality, and contributes to the fight against global warming.
Both leaders in their speeches reiterated that the project reflects their organizations enduring commitment to protecting the planet for present and future generations.
The Ogun State Police Commissioner, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD., who had earlier received the delegates in his office through the Officer-in-Charge of Works, CSP Olayemi Kolawole appreciated Rotary Club of Abeokuta Prestige and JIMLAT Foundation for their thoughtfulness in fulfilling one of the needs of the command at this time.
The residents and community leaders at the various locations also expressed appreciation for the thoughtful initiative describing it as timely and beneficial to the environment. The trees planted, Terminalia ivorensis (Black Afara) which were gotten from the Forest Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Ibadan are expected to grow into lasting symbols of hope, resilience, and collective responsibility.
Other members of the Rotary Club present at the event were Rtn. (Engr.) Oluwabusuyi Emmanuel, Rtn. Oluwadamilare Onabanjo, Rtn. Alhaja Fausat Olajuwon (the Assistant District Governor of Rotary International, D9111), Rtn. (Chief) Showummi Musibau, Rtn. (Mrs.) Fatosin and past president (Rtn.) Oduwole Adewole, among others.
Furthermore, as part of its commitment to advancing one of Rotary International’s key areas of focus (Basic Education and Literacy), the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Prestige also carried out an impactful Education and Literacy Project at St. Michael Primary School, Rolu, Obantoko, Abeokuta.
The initiative was designed to improve learning conditions and promote literacy among pupils within the community. During the outreach, the Club donated books, writing materials, and other essential learning aids to enhance the pupils’ educational experience. The event also featured interactive reading sessions and motivational talks to inspire students’ interest in learning and reading culture.
Teachers of the beneficiary school were engaged in a brief capacity-building session focused on effective classroom engagement and techniques to foster pupils’ participation and comprehension.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Prestige, Rtn. Adedayo Ayegbokiki reaffirmed the Club’s unwavering commitment to supporting education as a cornerstone for community and national development. He noted that empowering young learners with the right resources and guidance is fundamental to building a better future. He concluded by reaffirming to the school management that the school has been adopted by his club for every educational project and that JIMLAT Foundation is also willing to partner with the club for the construction of some facilities in the school.
The Head Teacher of the school, along with representatives of the community, expressed profound appreciation to the Club for its thoughtful intervention and continued dedication to humanitarian service.
