In a bold and strategic move to combat cervical cancer and enhance women’s healthcare access, the Phlox Health WASH Foundation, in collaboration with WASH 94.9 FM and other key stakeholders, is set to launch a Free HPV Vaccination and Cervical Cancer Screening Initiative for girls and women in Lagos.
This vital public health intervention will take place from Thursday February 13th to 15th, 2025, at the Phlox Health WASH Foundation/WASH FM premises, located at Plot 770 Somide Odujirin Avenue, Omole Phase 2, Lagos.
This landmark initiative underscores a deep commitment to preventive healthcare and aligns with global efforts to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer, a leading cause of mortality among women worldwide.
The event will feature eminent female healthcare professionals and women leaders who will lend their expertise and advocacy to raise awareness and foster inclusivity in healthcare access.
The opening address and keynote speech will be delivered by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health.
A distinguished healthcare administrator, nurse leader, and advocate for women’s health, Dr. Ogunyemi brings a wealth of experience from both public and private healthcare sectors.
Having previously served as Commissioner at the Lagos State Health Service Commission from 2015 to 2023, her leadership has been instrumental in advancing healthcare policies.
Her presentation will explore cervical cancer prevention strategies, the role of HPV vaccination in reducing disease burden, and the critical need for equitable healthcare access.
Her insights will serve as a clarion call for increased investment in preventive healthcare.
Joining her at the event is Hon. Omolara Oyekan-Olumegbon, a distinguished legislator and advocate for women’s rights.
As the representative of Lagos Island I in the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly and Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, and Job Creation, she remains a formidable force in championing gender-focused policies.
A staunch supporter of youth and women’s empowerment, Hon. Oyekan-Olumegbon will deliver an address on the importance of HPV vaccination and its impact on adolescent girls and women.
Further enriching the discourse, Associate Professor Anthonia C. Sowunmi, Nigeria’s first female Associate Professor of Radiation & Clinical Oncology, will present a comprehensive paper on early detection and prevention of cervical cancer.
As a faculty member at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and a Consultant Oncologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), she has been at the forefront of cancer research and treatment.
Currently heading the Department of Radiotherapy at LUTH, her expertise in oncology will provide invaluable insights into cutting-edge treatment and screening methodologies.
