As far as the Association of African Universities(AAU) is concerned, former Nigeria’s President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo remains one of Africa’s living Icon whose monumental impact and legacies in the education sector and economic development is of the continent still stand till date.

The AAU, comprising over 3000 universities across Africa, has extended warm felicitations to Chief Obasanjo in commemoration of his 88th birthday which held in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
In a letter signed by the AAU Secretary-General, Prof. Olusola Bandele Oyewole, expressed in glowing terms the intellectual sagacity of the person of Chief Obasanjo both in and out of power.
Prof. Oyewole, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), lauded him for his lifelong commitment to leadership, governance and the advancement of higher education in Africa, saying these qualities remain an inspiration to generations.
The letter stated: “Your Excellency, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on this momentous occasion of your 88th birthday. It is with great admiration and deep respect that we celebrate a true African statesman, a visionary leader, and a tireless advocate for education and development.

“Your lifelong commitment to leadership, governance, and the advancement of higher education in Africa is an inspiration to generations. From your tenure as Head of State(1976–1979) to your service as President of Nigeria (1999–2007), you have consistently championed policies that have transformed education, fostered economic development, and strengthened African unity.
“Your passion for higher education and research has left an indelible mark on the
academic landscape. Through your leadership, you played a pivotal role in the revitalization of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), ensuring greater access to education. Your support for the establishment of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) and the creation of TETFund has provided vital resources for research, infrastructure, and faculty development.
“Even beyond policy, your personal pursuit of lifelong learning, culminating in a PhD in Christian Theology, serves as an enduring example of your dedication to knowledge and intellectual growth.
“Beyond education, your legacy extends to peacebuilding, democracy, and economic
integration across Africa.
“Through the African Union(AU), ECOWAS, and NEPAD, you have worked tirelessly to strengthen African unity and global partnerships. Your continued efforts in international diplomacy and leadership mentoring highlight your unwavering commitment to the continent’s progress.
“Your Excellency, on this special day, we celebrate your unparalleled contributions to Africa and beyond. May your years ahead be filled with continued strength, wisdom, and fulfillment.”
